McDonalds Nutrition Action

As I read the article about the addition of nutrition information on McDonald’s menu, I couldn’t help but think it’s useless. McDonalds is known for its great tasting food and easy convenience. With the implementation of nutritional charts at fast food restaurants, people are thought to choose healthier options. The logicality of the new enactment does not seem to be thought out correctly.

When people go to a fast food restaurant, like McDonalds, they don’t typically think, “I wonder what would be the healthiest option for me..” rather, they think, “I am so excited to get my hands on a juicy burger and fries!”

While the health conscious people, like myself, will greatly appreciate the nutritional information, it is different for the “regulars” or more overweight individuals. The difference is the people who will change their options are the people who want to lose weight and have no other restaurant to go to. If people wanted to lose weight and become healthier, they would not go to McDonalds in the first place.

Additionally, People will not change their mind at the drive through because it is inconvenient to look over the different numbers restaurant is going to provide. A fast food restaurant is supposed to be convenient, looking over a ton of different numbers will take a large amount of time and the customers who already know what they want won’t even bother to glance at the calorie counts.

Besides the fact that people will not look at the nutrition information, the people who need to change their diet do not have knowledge of what the nutritional information even means. It’s one of the reasons the nation is so obese, we lack the knowledge of how to understand what nutritional labels even mean. Most people just look at the calories, but there is much more than the amount of calories in a product. Sometimes a high calorie menu item has great protein and beneficial fiber for the human diet.

However, I am excited to see that they are starting to add healthy options to the menu. They even have a new regulation of putting in apple slices for all kids’ meals while reducing the fries in half! This addition is great because kids love fruit, but don’t think about the different options that are available, especially at a fast food restaurant. Although there are healthy selections on the menu, I think the best course of action would be to get rid of the unhealthy alternatives, so there would not be a risk for to sabotage a meal.

Furthermore, seeing the idea is to reduce and prevent obesity, America needs to redo the whole concept of fast food. Fast food restaurant ingredients are unhealthy and loaded with chemicals. If fast food restaurants, like McDonalds, were to design a whole new menu created with natural and healthy ingredients, obesity would truly decrease. I think this idea would be able to positively influence the American diet if the fast food industry changed their process of preparing their food.

  1. Absolutely agree with you. McDonald’s meals don’t provide any nutritional value only “empty” calories – that is where the problems start. People don’t think about nutrition at all but only about convenience. We (society as a whole) losing the ability to understand what is good and what is bad for us.
    I’ve been to McDonalds (or any other chain Fast Food Restaurants) in 15 years. And I don’t think that will change ever. I don’t miss it, or think about it. Just the thought of it makes me go igit.

  2. I LOVE this post Nicole! I 100% agree with you! I live in Canada but we face similar issues here. I am a new mom of twin boys and all I can think about is how I’m going to avoid taking them to McDonald’s when I know all the kids around them will be going. I wish McDonald’s (and all other fast food chains) would seriously consider a complete menu overhaul and introduce a new way of eating, with whole fresh foods and no chemicals. If it wasn’t an option to eat unhealthy, we wouldn’t have so many obese people with extensive health problems in North America.

    1. I completely agree with you, as a babysitter and nanny I love to make healthy meals and grocery trips with kids and they love eating healthy, but they don’t know it. They love to help make their meals and even try new things if I tell them it tastes good :). If there were healthy options kids could try at a McDonald’s, they could see eating healthy can be even better without all the chemicals and additives, but they don’t have that option. 😦

    Can you imagine what future generations would become accustomed to?! That would be so awesome if that were to happen. Unfortunately, that takes time and money, and from a business perspective, Big Food is not going to want to invest in ingredients that don’t get their customers addicted to their products. 😦

  4. While I think showing calorie count is a good start, I think what I’d personally rather see is fat content. We all need calories every day, but I think it might be more eye opening to know if I’m about to order something with 25 grams of fat versus 10 grams of fat. Great thoughts on nutrition, though; more people need to think like you do regarding a complete approach to a healthy diet!

  5. I agree with you. Wouldn’t it be great if we could create a junk food tax and with that money subsidize organic and healthy foods. Imagine if a McDonalds hamburger would cost $10 instead of less than $1 and all that tax be applied to bring the prices of healthy foods down. We probably would not have an obesity problem.

    1. haha, I always think about that and how everyone would go crazy if they had to pay that much for fast food. It’d be quite a sight, but well worth the action in the end. It really goes hand in hand though; would you rather pay for expensive healthcare and be part of your own problem because you have to worry about your health? Or you could pay maybe a little bit more for healthier food and have lower healthcare. It’d be worth it in the long run. I’d choose the latter either way; being healthy makes us healthier anyways. And obesity, goodness I could go on and on about the subject(I’m sure you’ll see more posts on here about my views of it in the future); however, in short, I wish I could do something about it and help others because it’s so sad.     1. Agreed! Have you seen the rebuttal movie, “fat head”? It’s interesting, but I still think fast food is horrible. Thank you for your response- I love to see what people have to say about their views on health and nutrition!

  6. I totally agree with this article. The only people who will care about McDonald’s nutrition info is people who are already planning to make healthy choices. There’s no law that says people who eat at Fast Food restaurants have to get burgers and fries, and if a health-concious person happens to dine there, they will not get a Big Mac literally stuffed down their throat – it’s just a matter of choosing to get a salad or a smoothie.

  7. Chemicals in fast food. Reminds me a local experiment (probably all over) where a doc put a happy meal on the counter and 8 months later it looked exactly the same. Yikes! Not I. Thanks for raising awareness.

  8. Here’s another issue; McDonald’s food contains no micronutrients. Sure, you could fit it into your daily caloric intake without getting fat, but the lack of vitamins and minerals in the food means you don’t get the nutrients your body needs. Check out this story of a girl who ate nothing but McD’s. She wasn’t fat, but she wasn’t healthy either:
