Antioxidants, healthy little agents!

Doctors tell you they’re good for you, but many of us don’t even know what they are. So what the big deal about these molecules?

Antioxidants have been seen to prevent diseases and have many health benefits. Antioxidants inhibit agents that benefit us by fighting oxidative stress and free radicals. Aging causes you body to suffer from oxidative stress during oxidation: a process that occurs when molecules in your body lose electrons to electrically charged molecules of oxygen in your blood stream. The electrically charged molecules are called free radicals and have potential to cause damage to cellular DNA and lead to disease overtime. This is why it is important to have a diet rich in antioxidants to keep levels of free radicals low.

So, what increases free radicals? Smoking, drinking, sunbathing, air pollution and radiation.

What other benefits do antioxidants provide us with? The reduce wrinkles and preserve the texture of skin, reduce incidence of sunburn. Although it’s not proven to treat diseases, research has seen prevention of a number of degenerated age- related diseases: cancer, cardiovascular disease, cataracts, Alzheimer and immune dysfunction.

**Different antioxidants may benefit different areas of the body as well:

  • Beta carotene, found in carrots, may help maintain eye health
  • Lycneopene in tomatoes can contribute to prostate health.
  • Flavanoids in tea, cocoa and chocolate are good for you heart.
  • Proanthocyanides in cranberries and applies can aid maintenance in urinary tracts.

Where can we find all these great antioxidants?
Fresh fruits, veggies, and wwhole grains. Bright fruits like tomatoes, corn, carrots, and blueberries are all great choices.
